A WORD ABOUT EDITORIAL SERVICES
Professor Textbook has a number of editorial services
that we offer to the publishing industry as well as our authors.
The standard edit applied to a manuscript is the Copyedit as listed
below. Other options do exist
Manuscript Critique - $175 Flat
Fee
One of our Senior Editors will review your manuscript, providing
feedback that will allow an author to update their work and have
the knowledge that their book is up to the standard of any traditionally
published textbook. The Editor creates an outline for the author
that analyzes a wide variety of writing skills and provides constructive
criticism with the goal of publishing the best textbook possible.
Our Editor will provide additional recommendations
with regard to the level of edit that the manuscript needs, such
as a proofread, copyedit or development editor.
All of the feedback provided by our Editor is
designed to be incorporated into the manuscript by the author—these
are changes after all that will make you a better writer. Remember,
though, that everything our Editor recommends is based solely upon
their opinions and expertise—you may follow their comments
to the letter, incorporate some, or reject them all. We fully believe
that every author should have complete control over their content.
Standard Services
Every time we produce a product for a publisher, there are certain
"standard" editorial processes that each and every book
a publisher produces receive. These include proofreading, copyediting,
and/or development editing. Copyediting is the single most important
service that will "make or break" every book's editorial
success.
Proofread - This is a check of
the grammatical "nuts and bolts" done by an experienced
editor. Our editor will work through your manuscript, correcting
basic errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax.
Copyedit - Proofreading is good
and catches many mistakes, but most manuscripts benefit from an
Editor spending time on structure, flow, and consistency. Our Editor
will work through your textbook manuscript from start to finish—often
reading it in its entirety two or three times. They will be looking
for all the items covered in a Proofread, but also addressing sentence
structure, outline, word choices, flow, tense and consistency. They
will add queries, and suggest basic structural changes and make
recommendations to improve readability. This is our standard editorial
service applied to all textbook projects.
PREMIUM EDITORIAL SERVICES
Development Edit - This edit
is most often started at the Outline stage and then progresses to
reviewing the developing work at all levels - paragraph, chapter,
and complete manuscript. Our service begins with a thorough review
of the genre, target market, and specific topic. The Editor is working
almost as a writing coach. At the early stages, the Editor will
review changes with the Author, making the initial updates directly
in the manuscript itself. The manuscript is then updated more fully
by the Author, with frequent review by the Editor.
A primary goal of our Editor is to ensure that
the needs of the reader are being fully met - including complete
content, organization of material, presentation of core concepts,
and the development of supplemental content such as lists, charts,
art, and other non-text elements.
Supplemental Writing - Quite
often authors have an idea, but find it difficult to produce complete
content. We'll provide a seasoned professional writer who can help
an author fully develop their ideas and then provide the "wordsmithing"
needed to get them to paper. Our writer will take your outline,
combine it with extensive interview time, and produce a fully developed
First Draft manuscript. This will then be provided to the author
for review. This service also includes a Copyedit. Due to the highly
custom nature of this service, both cost and timeline are developed
on an individual basis.
POST PRODUCTION SERVICES
This suite of services are typically performed
by traditional publishers on the final "printer ready proofs":
Final Proofread - Text elements
and content should be reviewed thoroughly after it has been composed
into book form. The Design and Layout of a book is never 100% perfect
- as can be evidenced by looking at ANY traditionally published
book. However, traditional publishers try to get as close to perfect
as possible by having another "set of eyes" review the
content in its book form. Our proofreader will read the composed
pages looking for additional editorial mistakes, bad breaks, mis-formatted
text and design elements, and many other small errors that can affect
the readability of your book.
Indexing - Every textbook can
benefit from an index. Our indexer creates a full index of your
book based upon the topics discussed. This service greatly increases
the readers experience with your book.
Book Cover Copywriting - The
cover of your book is one of the most important sales tools you
have to "hook" potential buyers. And, the the words written
on the cover of your book, are the keys to closing your sale. This
text needs to be crystal clear, build a case for your book, and
provide the reader with a compelling reason to open the pages. Our
marketing staff will provide complete development and writing services
for both your back cover copy, author biography, and extended versions
of both for our web site. |
