Professor Textbook Author Guidelines
Professor
Textbook welcomes inquiries from professors, instructors and teachers
looking to publish a textbook. We publish textbooks in nearly all
disciplines. The best way to understand what we do is to spend some
time reviewing our web site and checking out some of our titles.
We've found this to be the best way to gain an understanding of
our approach and thoughts on textbook publishing. We, of course,
heartily encourage you to make a phone call.

Before Professor Textbook
accepts a manuscript for publication, we follow a fairly standard
acquisition process. The typical first phase of the textbook acquisitions
process is for a Professor Textbook editor to review a brief prospectus
(we've included our guidelines below)
This does not mean that
we can't get moving immediately - you are welcome to send us a quick
email to our address below that outlines your interest in publishing
a textbook and the course or subject you are intending on covering.
In the email, let us know your contact information. A Professor
Textbook associate will contact you to further refine the idea and
whether or not the project is a fit for our company, and if we continue
to move forward we'll ask for the prospectus, your resume or curriculum
vitae and those items outlined below.
Thank you for thinking of Professor Textbook!
Prospectus submissions can be emailed to:

Prospectus Guidelines
Your prospectus isn't anything more complex than
an initial outline that presents your goals for your proposed textbook.
Your prospectus should also let us know what you believe to be the
textbook's viability in the broader marketplace (beyond your school).
With that said, however, it is quite common for professor to publish
a textbook focused solely on their students and course - a truly
custom, focused and effective teaching too. A prospectus should
run to two or three double-spaced pages.
Your prospectus will become the basis of what
we begin to build - it is, if you will, the cornerstone of the textbook
publishing process and an invaluable tool for both you and Professor
Textbook. This document should help you focus and refine your ideas.
Your prospectus will become the core of our development and production
processes as well as any future marketing campaigns
Your textbook prospectus should contain the
following sections and information:
Executive Summary of the project.
The target course, anticipated content level, anticipated course
attendance and expected sales at your school. Outline (briefly)
why you are looking to publish this textbook.
Competitive Overview. Who are
your target competitors and why is your textbook different than
those already offered? What is the anticipated benefit to the student?
Competitive Advantages. Your
textbook must have qualities of value that existing textbooks do
not have. What are these, and what needs are unmet by the current
product offerings?
Brief Table of Contents. Clearly
defining your table of contents to the 2nd level will help you (and
us) understand the breadth of your textbook. If you can, add an
'anticipated page count' to each primary head. For marketing purposes,
textbook reviewers and schools interested in adopting your book
will review in-depth your table of contents. The table of contents
will also help us define and build your Search Marketing campaign
later in the process.
Suggested review sources. Every
discipline has individuals that can lend credibility to a project
with a positive review. Let us know if there are contacts you have,
or certain individuals in the field that may prove helpful in evaluating
the textbook materials.
Sample elements / ideas. If at
all possible, please include at least one initial chapter. Our preference
is to have one early / introduction chapter and one from later in
the book. Ideas for cover design, interior layout, marketing - anything
at all - should be included here also.
Target publication date. We need
two things here - a realistic date by which you can finish your
manuscript, and a target release date. Keep in mind that the production
process will probably take more than 16 weeks. We'd also like you
to let us know of any factors that might influence the publication
date - such as conferences or semester needs.
Don't get too tied up in the 'official' items
above - really, your prospectus is a living, growing document (that
will actually mature over time) that helps us understand your vision,
goals and purpose for your textbook. We'll work with you and this
'living' document to build a strategy for publishing, distributing
and marketing your textbook.
Professor Textbook is here to help you publish
a better textbook. After all, it's your textbook - publish it your
way! |
