FAQ
How much experience do you have?
Professor Textbook was "born" by 3 guys
who all have a long history in the "traditional" publishing
and printing businesses. We come specifically from the Acquisitions
(the Editors who sign books at traditional publishing houses), Production
(the guys who build the books for traditional publishers), Marketing
(um - self explanatory, right?), and Printing industries. Our company
has built (and still builds) textbooks for some of the largest publishers
in the world - across all sorts of topics. We've also built books
for some of the SMALLEST publishers - individual authors. But they
all come to us for one reason—we care about our customers.
Can I make a profit publishing a textbook?
Most certainly - the vast majority of our authors
that publish a textbook are profitable within the first six months
after publication. Publishing your own textbook and then using it
in your classroom setting is good for both your students and you.
Your students will receive a custom product tailored to your course,
your students may save more than 50% over purchasing a large publishers
textbook, you will receive the profit from the sales - not some
large publishing house.
Where are you located?
We are located in the heart of the Midwest - in
Indiana at 4010 West 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46268. You can
reach us toll-free via the Dog Ear Media
offices at 1-866-823-9613.
May I come to visit?
Of course. We welcome visits from potential authors
and anyone interested in our company. Please call to arrange a personal
tour.
Is Professor Textbook a publisher?
"Yes" and "Sort of"... Our
primary business is to enable YOU to be a publisher—but we
offer ALL of the services provided by a traditional publishing house.
You choose what services you want. We'll handle all the mechanics
of building, marketing and distributing your book.
What is on-demand publishing?
"On-demand" means exactly what it implies:
your books are created as you need them. We can create books in
as little quantities as one, and as quickly as 48 hours. Technology
has enabled us hold your book in electronic form, without the need
for a warehouse and lots of inventory. This removes the two greatest
costs in publishing, allowing you to concentrate more fully on creating
EXACTLY the book you want.
How much does it cost to publish a textbook?
Publishing fees vary based upon the services required
- generally our service offerings start around $2500.
How much does it cost to print a tetbook?
The print cost on your book is determined by the
format and page count of your book - our book printing prices are
outlined here.

How do I set the retail price on my textbook?
When the physical characteristics of your book
(such as page count, covers, binding, size, etc.) are finalized,
Professor Textbook will calculate a single-copy printing cost (we'll
give you an estimate far before this point however). This price
is a function of trim size, binding, cover stock, colors, etc -
all the "physical" traits of your book. From that point,
you'll add in factors such as market and competion. You will have
the final say on what retail price is applied to your textbook.

Is there a special way to format my manuscript?
You can work in any number of ways - all of them
comfortably within the standard framework of MS Word. Professor
Textbook has a very typical manuscript formatting tool we'll send
you once we begin production. We'll trade production rounds back
and forth using both Adobe PDF and MS Word files - depending on
what path you've chosen to pursue.
